OK...I have been doing some digging...

Let's see, earlier this week, I posted about the explosion of Nesselroads (Nazelrod/Nesselrode/Nestlerod/Nazelroad etc) through Facebook. We even found one on the "other side of the pond" in Germany!

Well, ever curious, I started typing in search terms, starting with Nesselrath (Sardin's spelling when he left Germany in 1757-58) and Castle Dagstuhl. I found a brochure about 24 pages long with a brief history of that particular region of Germany. After reading it, I think I may have found where at least two of the branches may have come together.

Here is a portion of the brochure:

1290 Dagstuhl Fortress is built, Boemund von Saarbrücken becomes
the first lord of the fortress.

1330 The male lineage of the fortress lords dies out. Dagstuhl becomes a
„Ganerbenburg“ and is administered by the four royal families into which
the female heirs marry.

1616 onward Philipp Christoph von Sötern (1567-1652), Bishop of Speyer
and later Archbishop of Trier and Elector of Trier, acquires all property rights
concerning Dagstuhl Fortress.

1634 Dagstuhl Fortress becomes a Fideikommiss.

1635 Philipp Franz von Sötern (1634-96) is vested with the Fideikommiss.

1698 Kraft Anton von Öttingen (1684-1751), son from the marriage between Philipp Franz von Sötern’s daughter, Maria Sidonia (1656-91), and Graf Notger Wilhelm von Öttingen (1653-93).

1751 Josef Anton von Öttingen-Sötern (1720-78) comes into the Dagstuhl Castle inheritance. This marks the actual history of Dagstuhl Castle, which takes the place of the fortress, which starts to dilapidate in 1717. It is under his reign that Wadern County and Dagstuhl Castle experience economic and cultural growth.

1779 Rule over Dagstuhl Castle passes on to Hermann Friedrich Otto von Hohenzollern-Hechingen (1751-1810), the second husband of Antonia von Zeil-Wurzbach (1753-1814), who was first married to Josef Anton von Öttingen-Sötern in his second marriage.

1792 Countess Antonia flees Dagstuhl Castle ahead of the advancing French revolutionary troops. Ownership of Dagstuhl Castle is transferred into the hands of the French.

1806 Wilhelm Albert de Lasalle von Louisenthal (1768-1845) moves into Dagstuhl Castle with his family.

1815 Dagstuhl Castle has permission to call itself a manor.

The particular section that caught my eye was around 1330. The males died out and the FOUR daughters married various nobility. I don't know about you, but I am thinking this may be where the "Count Karl Branch" and the "Sardin Branch" actually began to grow their separate ways.

I have a copy of the brochure which I will attempt to stick up on facebook for familial perusal and research.

All I can say is "Wow!"

Let's see...since the last post here (February 2011, if you are keeping track), our Facebook connections are expanding darn near exponentially! (Remember from high school algebra this was that x:y ratio, where if one side went up by one, the other went up by two (or some other related factor like that)). So anyway, I became friends with a cousin in Maryland area who knows LOTS of other shoestring cousins. She and another cousin fired up a Facebook group that overnight exploded from 0 to 130 or so (not counting the ones that left the group before they realized we were most likely related!)

So, if you haven't done so, please sign up on facebook. It isn't just for finding family...you can find high school friends, current friends, friends of friends (and in my case my mom, her sisters, my GRAMMA, several of the Missouri family...you see what I mean?) darned near anybody!

We are sharing information on our particular branches and pulling together enough information to scare Funk and Wagnall's! (for you youngsters, they used to make encyclopedias. Glorified dictionaries that we used to copy verbatim for high school reports. Around book 17 or so, you could find the transparencies of the human body inside to skin...oh heavens! Just go ask your mom about encyclopedias! :) )

RAH RAH for the Nesselroads...Nazelrods....Nesslerodts...Nestleroads...Nesselrodes...however we spell it!!

*HUGS!!* Jen

PS Welcome to the newcomers! Dont be shy...we are all related!

Answered prayer...

Today as I was driving back to Iowa from a busy weekend at Laskiainen, my phone rang.

It was the Human Resources lady from the hospital that is 1 1/2 blocks from my apartment. She asked where I was, and being me, I said "You really want to know?" She said she did and I was honest: I said I am just south of Duluth, headed home to Spencer, what's up? She said that after talking things over with the Nursing Manager, she wanted to offer me a position at the hospital!

So, after a frustrating 6 months of trying to be patient (and not succeeding at times), I am the newest Med-Surg nurse at the hospital. WHEW! The job is part time to start with an exceeding excellent chance to go full time after 4-6 months, rotating 12 hour shifts, every third weekend, with benefits.

I feel like a huge weight is off my shoulders. I can feel the peace of getting a structure to live in. I will know 6 weeks in advance what my schedule will be and I can set a pattern to it. I am a creature of habit. I love patterns and am comfortable with knowing what I will be doing any given day.

My neighbor, Ada, didn't even let me get passed "Spencer Hospital called and..." before she said "OH! I am soooo happy for you!" It was a 3 hug visit, she was so excited.

So, I guess I will be staying in Spencer for the time being. I don't mind it. I know Pops was pulling for Florida, but after I get a few years experience, I may be able to wrangle a winter months in Florida/Spring, Summer, Fall in Iowa job yet.

Now, Laskiainen...The Finnish Sliding Festival. Up on YouTube, I have 4 video clips of the weekend. There are 3 sliding ones, and one of the Vippu Kelkka (whip sled).

My Cousin Andrea

My Cousins Chris (Andrea's husband) and Emma Kay (their daughter)

My Cousin Mason from North Carolina, his first Laskiainen

The Vippu Kelkka (When I was younger, this was actually "built onto" the lake, and there was no sissy....errrr seat belt on the sled. You learned how to hang on....and trust the pushers to be nice :) )

Welcom 2011!!

Well, I don't know if we actually made 2,010 relatives by 2011...but we must be close! I am still receiving "I heard from someone who thinks they are related to us..." emails!

We have a tree on myheritage.com. You will need a free account to message me and wait. Yes, wait. You see, I forgot about the myheritage one (despite having the genealogy program's shortcut on my desktop) until one day I clicked on it...THEN I remembered. So I am trying to remember to check it each time I get a "might be related" facebook message.

My New Year's started out calmly. My son was here from northern Minnesota for a visit and we were watching the Burn Notice marathon. The next day, he had some friends from high school over for a visit (2/3 of my "stepsons") that ended up lasting all night. I had to smile to myself even as I woke up at 4 in the morning of the 2nd for a bathroom run to hear giggling from the living room. When the guys aren't here, it sure is quiet!

I am still working in long term care and seeking a hospital posting. Don't get me wrong, I do adore "my" little old ladies and gentleman (yes, we only have one fellow in the home, the other is currently hospitalized), but I know at this stage in my life: I want adventures! Given the age and the health statuses of my residents, the inevitable happens...and I still haven't developed the infamous skin. I have come to view death as not necessarily an enemy to be fought and battled, yett along with the relief that their battle against time/disease is completed, it still bites.

Just after the New Year, on Jan 4th, we managed a small family gathering in Eveleth, MN for Ma and Pops's 50th Anniversary. Their actual wedding date was the 7th, but I had to travel that day to get back for work on the 8th.

My son, bless his heart, is still on the waiting list for X-ray Tech. He was asked to fill out/confirm his choices of clinical sites, so I am prayerful that school will start up again for him soon! I have tried to be a patient and understanding mom and not push too hard about transferring colleges (again...yes, I have offered in the past)...and then I tell myself: He is young. He will find something else just in case. He has smarts. Trust him. Let him grow.

Well, that in a nutshell or two catches you up with this branch of the Nesselroads. Let us know what is new with you! After all, thanks to the World Wide Web, we found each other!

*New Year's HUGS to you all!**
